Radio Stations Get TXT MSG Vibes
January 26, 2004
Trying to appeal to listeners fed up with the busy signal often associated with calling into a popular radio station, Vibes Media unveiled iRadio, an Instant Response Text Messaging Platform designed specifically for radio promotions.
The real-time text messaging platform enables on-air radio personalities to communicate with listeners without having to pick up the phone. iRadio can be used to customize contests, such as concert ticket giveaways, according to listener response. iRadio’s built-in OptimumAnalysis Tools enable contests to be changed on the fly to boost audience participation. The tool also tracks when the messages were sent, how many and who sent them.
Listeners participate in promotions and contests via the text message function on their cell phones. Everyone who sends a message receives a response, regardless of service provider, according to Vibes Media. “With text messaging, stations don’t have to worry about listeners being shut out by busy signals or having to staff phone lines,” says Vibes Media President Jack Philbin.
Text messaging is becoming a part of marketing and promotional campaigns in other sectors as well. In television, for example, last summer AT&T Wireless garnered attention for its decision to let Americans vote for their favorite “American Idol” contestant. During the summer contest, AT&T Wireless said 7.5 million American Idol-related messages were sent by its subscribers. The success of the campaign has spurred other text messaging-powered contests, including car giveaways.
