Short message service (SMS), or text messaging, allows users and brands to send and receive short messages (160 characters max) over wireless networks via mobile devices. The content can include text, links or both. Once a SMS message is sent, it is stored in a central short message center (SMC), which forwards the message to the desired recipient. If the person is out of range or the wireless device is offline, the SMS is stored in the SMC and delivered when the recipient is available. Because SMS messages are transferred over the signaling channels, voice and data calls are not interrupted by SMS transfer.
